5 out of 5 stars Takes Some Getting Used To   December 3, 2007

Shipping costs more than the product, but it's still not a bad deal. These are made of some strange gel-like material that takes some getting used to but they work well. Each end has a different thickness so you can turn it around to get a different sound, which is a nice feature. Give them a try!

5 out of 5 stars Black Delrin plectra: A+   November 23, 2009
Fernand Raynaud (California, USA)
There's a lot of confusion possible when they tell you "color may vary". The good stuff is MidEast Mfg. product OUDQ, a taped-together bundle of ten black plastic plectra, made in Egypt. That's black Delrin or Celcon, i.e. Acetal, the stuff they use on harpsichord plectra. It's got a characteristic extremely glossy surface, and is generally black, but a greenish white is also legit. This is the best stuff for oud short of bone/horn/feather. The sound is clear and well-defined, the snap is controlled. These are not ready-made plectra, they are "blanks" that you take a rough and a fine sandpaper to, and shape how you like the tips. Delrin will hold edges thinner than paper. This is what oud players do when they are not tuning.

Delrin was first used on harpsichords because it sounds very much like feather quill, but is extremely durable. Replacing say 180 plectra on a big harpsichord is a big job, so having 20 years in between requilling thanks to Delrin makes Delrin very popular! Delrin is used to make self-lubricating bearings, code tumblers on safes, Mattel Hot Wheels, and plectra. On the oud a Delrin plectrum holds its shape practically forever, and generally outlasts the strings, the oud, the player, the city and the political system. MidEast (in Florida) ships promptly, very well packaged.

This is a joke. They describe it as ...."Plastic pick for the oud. Very flexible pick, 5" x 0.25" parallel sides, tapered ends. Color may vary." They are a full HALF INCH wide and totally unusable
