Excellent beginner's ukulele May 10, 2009 James Lin (Los Angeles, CA) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I've been wanting to learn ukulele for a while now and the price of the Lanikai LU-21P convinced me to finally get one.
The ukulele arrived in a coffin shaped box with some thin foam padding and an instructional booklet. The booklet contains some quick instructions on how to tune your new instrument and also a short introduction to reading ukulele tabs. It also comes with tabs and lyrics for:
- Row, row, row your boat
- He's got the whole world in his hands
- Are you sleeping?
- Twinkle, twinkle little star
- Amazing grace
- When Irish eyes are smiling
The ukulele itself is extemely light weight, but I wouldn't expect much more for such an inexpensive ukulele. Everything seems to be made of a light wood except for the frets and tuning gears which are metal. The tuning knobs are plastic. The strings are made from something called Nylgut, which look like thick fishing line. Despite the light weight, the construction feels very solid. Short of stepping on it, I don't think I'll be able to break it on accident. For anyone who is wondering, there is a "Made in China" sticker on the back.
Straight from the box, it definitely needs to be tuned and for the first week or so, you'll find that it goes out of tune very, very quickly. I read that this is common for new strings because the strings haven't yet had time to stretch out and settle. I've had the ukulele for exactly a week now and it stays in tune for much longer and doesn't go out of tune nearly as much anymore.
The instruction booklet explains how you can tune by ear using a tuner or another instrument like a keyboard, but the easiest way is to actually go on the internet! Use your favorite search engine to look for "ukulele tuner" and you should find websites that have tools that can help you tune each string.
Overall, this is an excellent ukulele for the money. I've only just started learning how to play so I'm no aficionado by any means, but to me, the LU-21P feels and sounds exactly how I expected a ukulele would.
Love this thing January 16, 2010 L. Reid (CA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Now, before I bought this I'd never even touched a ukulele before in my life. I was interested in them because of their size (my hands are too small for the guitar- I'm a very tiny woman) and the ukulele seemed to stand out as a much better fit.
I did a ton of research, read reviews, and watched review videos and I narrowed down the choices to this one. The price and the described quality definitely seemed like a good combo so I ordered this from here. After about a week of eager waiting it arrived, and much to my delight it was easy to tune. I have a chromatic tuner which I HIGHLY recommend to anyone who wants to pick up an uke or any other stringed instrument. So I got it tuned quickly and was already producing something that sounded like music- pretty good for a mostly non-musical person.
Now, one of the things I had read about this is that the strings fall out of tune right away. The first day, I did need to tune it a couple times, but after that it's kept it's tune really well. That was my biggest worry- something that falls out of tune right away might seem a little intimidating and very frustrating. (I used to have a terrible little guitar that couldn't stay in tune for any amount of time) But, I was very pleased and my worries were unfounded.
I am very happy that I chose this one, it looks and sounds lovely and I would recommend it to anyone.
Great Ukulele June 13, 2010 C. M. McKeown (Crawfordville, FL) Received my Lanikai Pineapple Ukulele from Anthill Music as a gift during the holidays and I love it. It's sound is full yet soft. It came with a good set of strings already on it that I used for months before replacing them. The body design is very comfortable to hold and the wood is attractive.
It's a great uke for the price and I'd highly recommend it for beginners - intermediate.
Great Little Gem of an Instrument August 5, 2010 Michelle After looking through several reviews and ukulele sites, I chose the Lanikai LU-21 Pineapple. I ordered it through Amazon and it arrived on time in packaging that made it so it would not get damaged in the shipping process. It is a great, cute instrument that is well made and comes with the Aquila Nylgut strings. I am a beginner ukulele player but I have played guitar for about a year now and was looking to diversify. It is a lot of fun to play and I would highly recommend it!
AMAZING BUY!! August 10, 2010 L. Romero WOW! I read the reviews just to make sure I was getting the right Uke. Some of the more renown ukulele sites claimed that the Lanakai LU series is the way to go for beginners. This being said, I have never in my life held or even seen a Uke in person, but I do love this one! The Uke DOES come with the recommended Aquila strings, I bought an extra set not knowing this but oh well.It sounds BEAUTIFUL. It's really easy to play seeing how I recently picked up guitar as well. The funny thing though is that chords that were easy on the guitar seem a bit harder on the Uke and the easy chords on the Uke tend to be the impossible ones on the guitar...at least for me. The strings fall out of tune quickly but no biggie. It is a beautiful piece of work, nothing wrong with any part of the body or anything else. It seems sturdy enough, I mean unless I step/sit on it, I think it'll be fine. The ONLY problem I have personally is the extremely size which is why I'm hoping to get a Baritone Uke later on. I know what I was getting myself into when I bought it but it seems so tiny, it's a bit bigger than my guitars body. I'm still getting used to it so it's a bit awkward for right now but I'll be fine. As soon as I get really good I think I'll post some youtube videos. I recommend this purchase for anyone looking for a hobby or another instrument to pick. Especially if you can or are learning to play guitar it's really easy and fun!
